The total "No No's" of social media

www.google.com

Five tips of what not to say on your social media profile.

Welcome to the Arena of PR. Do you ever perhaps think about what an individual can or cannot say on social media? The Vice President of human resource Rosemary Haefner at CareerBuilder.com has said that, “social media is a primary vehicle of communication today, and because much of that communication is public, it’s no surprise some recruiters and hiring managers are tuning in”.

  • Before you ever post anything... pause and THINK about it.

Always bear in mind that anything you post on any social platform can be for your advantage or disadvantage. Therefore as a PR student and a future professional, always pause and think about what you are about to post on any site. This might come back to haunt you in the future.
  • If it cannot be said to my face, rather not say it online.

Firstly understand that there is nothing like "privacy" on social media and anything you say, which may be inappropriate, can and will be used against you. Remember that your potential employers have their eyes and ears on social media.
  • Keep your profile professional at all times.

This is always advisable because you don’t want to appear as unprofessional to you future employers.
  • Report any fake accounts that may be used against you.

This will help you a great deal because people will be aware of the fake account.
  • Delete any inappropriate picture or comment posted in the past that might harm your image.

Anything that is inappropriate on your cv is negative and will therefore harm your reputation, it is very vital that you protect your reputation as a potential future professional, by deleting things that are in your past knowing that you are heading for a bright future.

Social media plays a great role within industries and is now becoming a trend for organisations to look for potential employees on platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Google+ and Twitter to give them a glance of who you are outside your CV. Always know why you say what you are saying on social media and also mind the manner of how you say it, enabling you to maintain a professional profile.

  1. I totally agree with the above mentioned. Social media these days is a way of life, a way of communicating and another way of getting a job which makes it even more complex. These tips really help in becoming a better social media user and in the long run they can help one to become a media influencer. Great job.

    1. True, this is something upcoming professionals should be educated about. We sometimes do things without realizing what impact it will have in the future.

  2. I just want to emphasise more on privacy, I learned the other day that Facebook their privacy setting change all the time and when they make these changes they do not ask you. So we need to be careful in a sense that what you post privately now might loose the privacy five years from now

  4. That is so true, We always want to be dope and forget our future in our careers. I totally agree with you. People take social media like its their psychologist, when i hate someone I'll put it on my Facebook or When I'm angry I'll post a status. Facebook is not our psychic

    1. Interesting point you have there. We can just keep those to ourselves rather than publicly declaring it.

  5. I am loving this social media guide, if only more people could see it and follow it. I'd like to add that people should also be themselves on social networks and not pretend to be what they are not because it will make it seem as though they have multi- personalities when employers look into their social networks. that wouldn't be a good image

    1. Very good point you have there. Thank you so much Phumla. Employers would not want to hire someone who portrays to someone else on social media. But they should also remember to be professional and real too.
